~ The fun of mixing colors with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan ~

Hello friends....happy to see you here again.
I apologize for the infrequent posts lately. Things at The Empty Nest have been very busy.
New pieces and products and soooooo many new customers.
Every day I say that I will sit and write a blog post and then the customers start coming and before I know it....it's 5pm!
So here is one of the pieces that I just acquired from my lovely picker.
This old buffet has great potential, but was sadly lacking in pedigree.
Someone had painted her in an ugly dull black latex paint that almost had the feel of a not so nice chalkboard. Her top had also seen many patch jobs.
But I could see her inner beauty.
The doors had zero character, so I removed them. I will use them for a chalkboard later.
I decided to create a custom mix color using equal parts Coco and Duck Egg in the Chalk Paint® line of colors by Annie Sloan.
Annie's clean colors mix together beautifully...never turning muddy.

Pick up a copy of Annie's newest painting book
Color Recipes for Painted Furniture
for lots more tips on mixing Chalk Paint® colors for your DIY pieces

Two coats of my custom mix and a coat of Louis Blue
to the interior and on the drawer sides.
Love the pop of blue for added fun.

I applied a layer of Annie Sloan Soft Clear Wax then did some slight distressing with a 250 grit sanding block.
I fitted the newly opened cubbies with two large woven baskets and lined them with
Annie Sloan French Imported fabric in the Monaco Ticking pattern.

Now she is a lovely piece and perfect for a baby changing table or a flat screen TV.
Think outside the box people!

I wanted to show you another new piece in the shop.
I adore the mirror on this old buffet, I think it makes the piece special and I love the loooooong silverware drawer.
A very good decayed elegance piece.
Today's homes have so many uses for these old pieces.
They are not just for dining rooms anymore!

And just look at this gorgeous hand carved swan. The signature on the bottom is that of the very famous William Veasey!
The intricate carved detail on the feathers is fabulous.
Before I go I also want to mention that this month we are celebrating a very special milestone for The Empty Nest.
Hard to believe that it was one year ago on July 20, 2012, that I fulfilled a dream of mine and took possession of
92 Main St Suite 102
Old Town Warrenton, Va

I remember gazing at this cavernous space and wondering how the heck I would EVER fill it.

Fill it I have and it seems to be evolving with every new day.

To celebrate the occasion, I am inviting all my local friends and loyal customers
to come help me celebrate.
On Saturday July 20, I am throwing an all day
PARTY!

What a great piece, Janet! You're right, so many different ways you could use a piece like this. I LOVE the mix of Coco with the Duck Egg. They mix well together. I may have to try that mixture! : ) I haven't mixed any of the colors together yet.
