Stick a fork in me...I'm done!!

Before you read on, you still have time to enter my wonderful Janet Hill Studios Giveaway!
It is open until Monday night, March 21, 2011
Good Luck!
Hello friends.......yes, you heard me right...I'm finally DONE !
All of you who follow me, know that I have been working on my kitchen for a couple of months.
For my new friends, you can see my progression here and here.
First let me say that my kitchen was a lovely one...I really had no complaints except that I wanted to go light and bright.
I also wanted to make this happen for as little money as possible. Hey ..a gal who spends hours in thrift shops is not about to fork over thousands for a new kitchen.

So....here is the 'old' kitchen. Standard builders oak cabinets. In this photo I had just painted the walls grey. I used Behr's Ultra Premium in Silvered Sateen. The old walls were a paprika red...big color change!

Drum roll please........................
*
*
*
*

and here is my new 'Farmhouse' style kitchen!
Well..what do you think?
Big difference, don't you think?
I love coming downstairs in the morning to this bright and cheery room.
So let's take a closer look, shall we?

Before

Before

After

Before

After
Yes, I know I had said I was removing the doors above the fridge.
I need a break..I'll get to it later  ;->

faux brick I never quite completed ;-(

Remember this old thrift store plate rack before

Reborn with a fresh coat of black paint. Perfect for hanging a favorite apron!

Now I have a small shelf to display a favorite clock, needlepoint redbird, handcarved Carolina Wren and a little votive bird that was a special gift from a sweet friend.

Before

removed door & trimmed edges, hung cup hooks to create a litle teacup shelf
After

Small wooden teabag box I painted years ago

I just adore these corbels!
I painted Whisper, my sweet cat and friend of 21 years, onto a canvas place mat. Also painted the floral sugar jar.

I like how the sleek lines of the corbels mimic the lines of the beadboard

I worked very hard to do a nice finished  job with all the trim work.

What I love about the sink skirt is that I only need to sew up a new fabric to change the color scheme of the room.
It was my idea to carry the beadboard right down to the kickplate.
Nice professional touch I think.

I added beadboard and moulding around the island and painted it black. Black corbels were added to the ends of the island also.
Again...nice finished look.

my cabinets have totally lost their 'Builders Grade' look

I am so pleased with how the backsplash turned out. Adding the corbels was so worth it. They really add to the farmhouse look.

I painted the inside of the open cupboards using Tahini by Martha Stewart at the Home Depot.
The recipe box was a gift to my Mom that I painted back in the 90's.
She doesn't cook much anymore, so I am keeping it for her.

This is where the microwave was....it's not going back!
After being without one for 8 weeks, I have decided it is not a necessity.
First Walmart...now my microwave...so liberating!! We only think we cannot live without these things.

Fresh Rosemary and a sweet tin bird to keep me company while I wash dishes and watch the world go by.
So let's see my before kitchen one more time..

and now...

Yeah...I am pretty pleased with myself.
I would like to thank my secret agent for his assistance with cutting the big sheets of beadboard and for helping me with the detailed trim work..you rock 007!
(even though your perfectionism nearly drove me crazy)
So are you wondering what all this cost me?
Adding up the cost of :
Paint & Primer
Beadboard (3 sheets)
Trim pieces
Cabinet Knobs
Corbels (8)
Fabric
Skirt rod
Decorative German Porcelain Plates (Salvation Macy's) cheap!! (.75)
Hardware (nails,screws)
All from Home Depot!!
Many thanks to Bob my Home Depot paint guy
My grand total so far is ...
$493.55
I know for a fact that if I had hired someone to do all this , I would have spent at least $2,000.00.
I got a few estimates and they were way up there!
So am I proud of my hard work...you bet.
Do you have a room that you would love to change or update, but think you don't have the know how or means to get it done?
I'm here to tell you that you positively can do it!
Never underestimate a woman on a restyle mission.
Thanks to Layla from The Lettered Cottage for her inspiration...I fell in love with your kitchen!
Until next time...be kind and stay creative.

JANET JANET JANET! I've really been anticipating this day...you definitely sucked me into this project. I just LOVE your results...so clean...so happy...so bright...so pro. You and hubby are the bomb! (As we say). I am deeply impressed. Want to come redo my dining room now? I took all my stuff off the shelves hoping to inspire myself to dig into a little repainting project and so far I just divert my gaze every time I walk past that room. Maybe you will give me strength!

Oh Janet. I absolutely love it! You have been my inspiration throughout this remodel, I am still priming my bottom cabinets but I keep praying that my kitchen looks as beautiful as yours when I'm finished. You really have captured a farmhouse kitchen but in a fresh and bright way. I gthink I just spent half an hour scrolling back and forth through these photos! Great job my friend!

It hardly looks the same kitchen! It's so light and airy (BTW do you know that it is actually bigger than our sitting room??) You've worked so hard on this, now you can just enjoy it - and at a fraction of the cost of a *professional* job (not sure if it would have looked any better though).

This is such a wonderful transformation of your kitchen! I'm in awe and so jealous of anyone that paints their cabinets.. I have a husband who will have nothing but wood and I'm truly sick of looking at wood cabinets. Paint is a much cheerier look in a kitchen.

Amazing. I love it. Thanks for letting me know about your kitchen. We have some similarities in our kitchens with the white paint (although I used gray on the lower cabinets) and beadboard backsplash. I love your yellow paint on the inside of the open cabinets. I've been trying to decide what to do with mine to finish them off, but think I'll go for something patterned. I do love the yellow though. Hard to decide. Thanks for the kitchen tour.

Great job! You did what (& more than that!) I fear to do!
A question though: apparently, you didn't paint the countertop nor the top of the island, why?
Have a lovely day!

Janet Metzger, Artist said...

**Reply to Line's question about why I did not paint my countertops.
My countertops are a cream speckled formica and they are in perfect shape. My ultimate goal is replace them with something either grey or black. I haven't decided what kind of counter I want yet...still shopping. Also I am NOT a fan of painting kitchen counters. Most products are very messy and quite Toxic (read the warnings on the labels...good grief!)
So for now the formica stays...and I can live with that ;-)
Thanks for your question Line!

You did a wonderful job! Everything looks fantastic. I have the same cabinets and for several years have been doing other projects and procrastinating painting my kitchen cabinets (and white is my top choice). I too have white appliances and think it is tricky to get cabinets that look white and not dirty next to the white appliances. Can you share what the cabinet paint color was. Any tips on painting? I have read all the blogs, DIY sites etc.... But I LOVE your idea of having the beadboard on the kickplate as well. I will be doing that when I get around to it.

What an incredible job you've done. Your home possesses such style and elegance while still be comfortable and liveable. Thank you for sharing these beautiful images!

Saw your kitchen on hometalk and absolutely love it! May I ask, are the appliances almond or bisque? I have an almond stove and refrigerator and a bisque dishwasher and I started painting my oak kitchen cabinets with old white chalk paint. The old white does not look good with the almond fridge. What color white did you use on your cabinets? How has the paint held up almost a year later?

Went to the home page of your blog and now see that you stock Annie Sloan Chalk Paint! Would you recommend I continue with the chalk paint for the kitchen cabinets? What color(s) would look good with the almond appliances? Or should I switch to a latex paint? Thanks so much.

I just happened upon your remodel on Remodelholic and I am so glad I did! I have a really hard time finding kitchen inspiration if the kitchen design & layout doesn't match my own, but I really think I could draw from your ideas! We inherited handmade custom oak cabinets in our home and I've always wanted white but I feel guilty when I think about covering up that beautiful wood and my husband feels dreadful because he knows I'm terrible at painting and he would be recruited. I think I can! I think I can! I think I can!

I don't really know how I found you blog but I think it was from Pinterest and aprons!! Go figure! But you have truly inspired me to remodel my kitchen. Your kitchen is just like mine and this is the look I've wanted for the last 2-3 yrs. My husband kept thinking we couldn't paint our wood cabinets but after showing him yours and some others he's convinced the cabinets CAN be painted. Your kitchen is lovely. Have you made any updates over the last year?
